Fire, earth, air, and water. These are the four elements of classical western thought. If all the physical world could be broken down into distinct qualities, what would they be?
In the wilds, as a natural man, I look at my surroundings and notice four distinct essences: the one giving visibility and warmth to the earth is the fire in the sky—the Sun. The earth beneath me gives me structure and form to navigate—alongside nourishment and opportunity. The wind blows through the trees and carries familiar and unfamiliar scents from afar—my mouth releases air that then articulates into a beautiful stream of sounds; somehow, this wind appears to animate me. Deep in the earth, rising from the heat, transporting with the wind, and all throughout the oceans and streams I find water—it is everywhere and it shares an animating quality similar to the air.
In western astrology, also called ‘seasonal astrology,’ the concept of the four elements are of great importance. Why do we concern our astrology with the four elements? It goes back to the four seasons; we have four seasons because there exist two distinct seasons, summer and winter, and two additional seasons to transition us between the two, spring and fall. Spring is air because life is beginning to move again as the wind moves through everything. Summer is fire because summer is the warmest time of year. Fall is earth because it is the time of harvest—when we collect fruits of the earth. Winter is water because winter is cooling and depressing like water is to fire.
Let’s jump to the zodiac wheel: we have twelve signs. Twelve zodiac signs divided by the four elements will give us three signs for each of the four elements. Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

Assessing astrological conditions is a matter of considering the ‘temperament’ of the given factors. Specifically, with the zodiac, we can assert that the fire signs will be extraverted and glaring like fire, earth signs will be grounded and resilient like earth, air signs will be sociable and cerebral like the wind, and water signs will be cool, deep, and intense like water. Zodiac signs also have given polarities or ‘genders’: male or female (assertive or receptive). The elements can also be seen as expressing the interplaying balance of gendered behavior:
male | female | |
Masculine | Fire | Earth |
Feminine | Air | Water |
Overall, the four elements are a group of four archetypal energies that have unique traits with some overlap. The elements help us understand the emotional-societal volatility of a situation or period of time. When planets enter fire signs, things will heat up with that planet’s associations—when a planet enters a water sign, it will be a time of cooling, healing, and inwardness.
As an aside, you may be wondering about the fifth element—aether / spirit / quintessence /etc. Where is aether in astrology? Essentially, just as aether exists in world models, it is the glue that binds and produces the four elements—the hand that stirs, if you will.
