There are many schools, paths, and practices when it comes to inner-cultivation—this post will highlight just one way to consider your efforts to cultivate your sense of being.
According to ancient schools of thought, all things, including our bodies and minds, could be considered as being composed of a balance of the four elements. Let’s focus on the mental side of things, specifically in relation to your nervous system. In your emotional organs, what would the four elements be expressed as? Considering the qualities of the four elements, it would be as such:
Fire
The beating heart and driving factor—the warmth you feel towards yourself and that which you emulate to the world and others.
Earth
The sense of stability and structure—the capacity to remain present and resilient.
Air
One’s sense of liberty—your ability to recognize your sovereignty over your own life and actions.
Water
The flow between your feelings—the river by which you gently move pent up energy downstream, where it belongs.
Ask yourself this: where within me, and in what way, do I feel discomfort. Are you feeling sluggish and dark? You may have an excess in your ‘water energy,’ and you may need an exciting jumpstart (fire) to warm back up.
Are you feeling directionless or lost at sea? You may have an excess in water or air, so you need to balance this out by establishing solid land (earth) —stabilizing yourself and your focus.
What’s nice about this method is the simplicity of the means of self-regulation. Sometimes, addressing emotional-psychological hurdles is a matter of contemplating the elements of the world in which you live. This system is a great beginner tool for those of western sensibilities who want to practice inner cultivation. Perhaps one day I will write a post on the Chinese system of inner cultivation that uses their five-element system.
